Strange log in problem

Hi
  I need help. I can't log into Linux anymore.  I have my system setup for
Dual booting, Windows XP and Ubuntu Edgy. I have no problem loging into
Windows, but when I try to get into linux I can't I boot up, enter my user
name, enter my password, then the screen goes dark and I get the log on
screen again.
