Partitioning hard drive

Hi Everyone,
 I want to put ubuntu on my main computer,but don't want to take off everything until I have ubuntu setup. 
  My question is ,can ubuntu partition the drive during installation? I would like to use 50% of drive for ubuntu.If so how would I do it?If not how would I do it?
