Software Ownership?

Hi Sanjay,

I'm writing a paper on software ownership, the legal implications of
> copyright "theft" and the like. My major focus is going to be on how
> downloading copyrighted music, software and movies is theft, and the fact
> that law has evolved to accommodate technological advances.

But downloading copyrighted {stuff} isn't theft! The fact you have had to
put the word theft in quotes in the first line says to me that you don't
really believe this either.

Theft is criminal. Copyright infringement is civil.

I'm new to Canada so can't talk to the specifics of the law here, but for a
"world police" example, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowling_v._United_States and its references, as
well as countless other articles on the subject.

(Devils advocate NB: Even the Wikipedia article advises that this outcome be
taken with a grain of salt, as it's never been cited and thus never become a
precedent.)
