Hi Jojo.  Alot of distros disallow root to login via X (the gui).

Since you know the root password you should be able to login as normal and 
use su from a shell to get superuser privs.

Alternatively you can hit ctrl-alt-F1 and login with a text console. You 
can return to X with ctrl-alt-F7 or F8 (the exact location can vary).

Whichever method you use to get superuser privs, I would then recommend 
allowing full sudo access for your regular user a/c.
