yes there is a sound, but it's no african drums anymore

I didn't suggest you take the card out (although if the problem is with
multiple sound cards, that would surely work) ....I think the issue is
that if you do have multiple sound cards, maybe gnome is using the
onboard (not the creative) card by default ......but again, you can
change that in "system - admin - sound prefs" by changing the sound
playback settings to the correct soundcard
