There are lots of reasons why something that previously works
does not work any more.
1) Technology changes. Linux is very innovative. In particular in
the area of sound, a lot of things are changing. KDE uses now
phonon, Gnome has also changed some things. Sometimes,
the configuration between the different sound layers and
the plugins is not correct immediately.
2) Fixes may introduce also problems. One very experienced
VP for R&D once told me that every fix that is made in a
working product actually introduces 10-20 new bugs.
There might be lots of other reasons... This is something
anybody who works with technology has to live with. It
is not isolated to Open Source. The only way to prevent
this.... Never change a running system :D
