I had to reformat and reload everything this weekend. I double-booted Vista
and Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop. Recent updates did something to clobber
wireless on the Ubuntu side, and Vista had slowed down to glacial speed. I
tried restoring Vista from the disks I'd dutifully made when I got this
stupid machine (HP Pavilion with NVIDIA display) but it didn't work. There
seems to be a fault in my XP disk - the installation goes just a little way
and the machine turns off. So I switched totally to Ubuntu.
It's been years since I did a fresh install of Ubuntu, and it was amazing.
Half an hour after I began I had a working machine, although the screen
resolution wasn't right. After 2 hours of update downloads, a reboot, and
choosing the two suggested proprietary drivers for video & wireless
everything worked perfectly. I installed WINE and found that almost
everything I needed from Windows runs well. So I am a very happy camper with
a fast, capable laptop.
But I'm not going to switch to 8.10 again.
