Sorry I can't help more. But, have you considered going back to the 
version that worked ? With updates every 6 months, people feel somehow 
an urge to upgrade that shouldn't be. Ubuntu LTS support lasts 3 years. 
If a version works fine and is still supported, there shouldn't be a 
reason to upgrade.

On another note. I noticed often that things tend to break on upgrades 
when done from an install that's not completely up to date. It is also 
worth doing a complete re-install from time to time.
