Because you aren't downloading the right things.  Would a program
designed for Vista run under Win95?

Do yourself a favour. Stop downloading software.  Instead, use either
Add/Remove programs or Synaptic - both already installed on your system.
That way you will always get the right stuff for the machine you are
using.  If by chance you hit something that isn't there, when you
download make sure you get something for your version of Ubuntu.

Do it once or twice and you'll realize it's actually easier.
