52 Viruses and Malware???!? Damn. you have to be more careful.
If you are careful to only install programs from the distro repositories
then this should not be a viable attack vector for malware.
If you do not have WINE installed, then any email viruses wont be able
to run. I have yet to see an email virus that can run on a linux box
without WINE.
You're right Linux is not bulletproof, but with a bit of care (far less
then what would be needed in windows) you can keep it secure without any
AV programs.
I am curious. Just what AV software have you found that actually
protects against Linux targeted viruses and malware?
cheers,

In the last 4 years I've had 2 problems, that required an erase the disk
start over. They were Linux Viruses. On bootup it would do a check disc
(everytime), then report that I needed to rewrite some code, which I
didn't know how to do, I could not access X, and could not access the
Home Directory from the Command line. I took that hard rive out,
installed Ubuntu on another hard drive, found out all the information
needed to rewrite the code, as indicated, but it would not work. All the
programs I install are from Add/Remove and Synaptic, Nothing else!

I'm not sure that I have found a Virus checking program that does this,
I use Clam AV. My IP uses Postini, and that is virus checking and Spam
and blocked addresses. I had bought a Board from ASrock and the CD had
some instructions on it. Some music was playing in the background, and
someone was singing, so it was real difficult to hear the fellow
talking about what the things were that needed to be done. I mentioned
that to Asrock, I got a reply Email and there was a Linux Virus in it,
of the type that I described here. There was no way I could recover my
Hard Drive. I will not be buying ASROCK again! I do Backups but lost
about a years worth of Research. Linux is not Bullet Proof! I don't do
all the Facebook, Twitter, and other things. I use Yahoo, for the News
and Don't visit Porn sites. I search for Electronic Parts, visit Green
Energy places. So this is being careful, I hope!
Confusers have become
just too confusing for me. I used to program in Basic, even did some
Machine language stuff, but these days just don't know, all the extra
stuff that got added along the way. I learnt HTML 2 and HTML 4 and CSS,
but now it's a Jumble that is impossible to keep up with. I used Web
Plus 10 in Windows, but now I don't have Windows at all. I've made some
Web Pages with SCREEM, but it is not as nice as WEB PLUS 10, and Serif
was working on making their Software able to run on Linux, but I have
not heard that it is possible now. I don't have Wine installed.
I've been building computers since the early 486 days, and set them up
as custom made for the kind of software that the person wanted, but it
is getting to be impossible to do. Many times in Ubuntu some programs
did not have good documentation, and experimenting with stuff, winds up
me loosing a project or something. I have little projects that keep me
busy. I'm building 3 Solar Panels 70 Watts each, 3 Solar Panels 23
Watt, a second Windmill (AMETEK), Rewiring My Panels for it, and doing
wiring from the Inverters. I don't have the time most days to spend all
kinds of time getting all the facts about which Virus Scanner works
best. Then have to do all kinds of more reading to learn how to
configure it, and the thing is, after all that effort, it could be
dropped the next day! This would be a Winter Project. I'm older now, I
like SIMPLE, Complicated, gets to be forgotten quicker. I keep a Linux
Diary, but just don't have the time to be completely on top of
everything Ubuntu.
