Pidgin

Hi everyone, there is some basic stuff about Pidgin that I cant find in the
help file. Can someone tell me if pidgin only works with other Pidgin users
and can Pidgin notify me of incoming Gmail? I have configured Pidgin using
Account manager and it seems the only protocol it will work with is Bonjour?
