failed upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

Today my system said that I could upgrade from 12.04 lts to 14.04 lts, so i
did.

It appeared to install ok but---

When it rebooted to finish the install it got to the login screen and asked
me for my password.
I entered my password and then i got a rectangle in the upper left corner,
that said:


System program problem detected
Do you want to report the problem now?

with 2 button

Cancel            Report problem...


And then nothing happens when I press either button.
Actually the rectangular window disappears and I am left with my splash
screen and a mouse that works.
cnt alt F5 and F7  etc. also work.

Any idea how to get a working system from here????

I am using an older 12.04 LTS machine to send this message.
