Kile mag Umlaute unter Ubuntu nicht

Es sieht für mich so aus, als ob UTF-8-Zeichen fälschlicherweise als
Latin-9-Zeichen interpretiert werden, denn:

In welcher Kodierung liegt Deine LaTeX-Quelle vor? Probier z.B. mal
  recode u8..dump <meinequelle.tex
und schau, ob die Beschreibung für die Umlaute passt. Dann wäre es
UTF-8, und Du brauchst \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} in der Quelldatei.
(/usr/bin/recode ist im Paket recode.)
