I have a slightly strange setup I guess. I run Mutt inside a screen (as
in the command screen(1)) inside a Gnome terminal. But I've also tested
it without screen in a Gnome terminal, and also in a regular tty both
with and without screen. In all cases, exactly the same behaviour.

Now the weirdest thing: when I run it in xterm (with screen or without)
I don't have any problems at all. (In my WM menu (sawfish with the
Debian menu) I have two xterms one regular and one "unicode", both work
just fine.)

I set the locale (en_GB.UTF8) using 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' so
'/etc/environment' looks like this:

 LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

I've also set en_GB to be my locale in gdm so locale outputs the
following whether it's done in a Gnome terminal, xterm, or in a tty
console:

LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
