scribus wants PostScript fonts, that are installed, but obviously not found or ignored

I remember this happening to me some time ago, on Fink (apt-get for Mac 
OS X). Had the same problem on SuSe. It was a problem with freetype2 - 
which is in Universe. Have you got that package installed?

For me, on Hoary/x86, Scribus starts without any problems. Checking 
against your font list, I don't have gsfonts-x11 0.17 installed - 
perhaps try uninstalling that?
