Another option is that each student would push his own branch to Launchpad.
The workflow would be something like this :
$ bzr branch lp:ubuntu-doc
$ ... edit ...
$ bzr ci
$ bzr push bzr+ssh://student_id@bazaar.launchpad.net/~student_id/ubuntu-doc/hardy
The student can then request a merge or review of his branch.
