GUI for documentation, good or bad?

I've always thought of horizontal scrollbars as a barrier to
readability, because you have to track back at the end of each line with
your hand instead of your eye.  I'm afraid I don't follow the argument
about screen space - what would the problem be for readers if there were
no horizontal scrollbar?
