I don't exactly know the problem, but I can suggest some possible checkups...
1) Launch "Power Manger" application and see if any change in preferences...
2) Launch "System Monitor" and stop "gnome-power-manager" and see if
the problem solved...
3) Also "Alt+F2" --> gconf-editor--> apps --> gnome-power-manager and
check for some problems...
