For me it still boils down to what I would say in front of your
children. I keep thinking about children because we do have users as
young as 13 who are in our channels and maybe even younger.
Would any of us walk into a McDonald's and order a EFFIN BigMac? I would
hope the manager politely asks me to watch my language and if not kick
me out of the restaurant.
Would any of us start discussing a sexual topic in vulgar detail (fill
in your own vulgar words here) ? We all know what is acceptable language
in a public place and I see the Ubuntu name space as a public place.
Those user who like to argue that they swear in front of their
parents/children/priest/waiter... and think they will actually convince
ME that it is ok or that the word "fuck" is just random letters and we
assign meaning to those letters are IMHO EFFIN IDIOTS and deserve to be
removed.
As far as double standards towards fellow ops or regular users goes I
have been removed from #ubuntu-offtopic in the past and I deserved it. I
am not an op in that channel but if a fellow op in #ubuntu started
swearing or otherwise breaking the rules and they did not get the
helpful poke to stop on the first attempt I would have no problems
removing them from the channel as I would expect the same from them. It
is important to remember that -offtopic is a "social" channel and has a
different culture, does that mean the rules apply differently to some
users, yes sometimes they do.
