Hi Dan,
I too am a new user of Ubuntu and like you also suffered from not
knowing where to go for good "newbie" advice. It was somewhat
intimidating to join an existing user group comprised of experienced and
technical members when what I wanted was help at the grass roots level.
Like you I also intend to try and set up some sort of Newbie user group
to try and dis-spell some of the myths around Linux and to help people
to take that first step.
I'm in south Taranaki so it is a bit of a trip to go through to New
Plymouth for the local Linux user group meeting(TLUG). If you would like
to stay in touch and share experiences/knowledge my email is
daveandgail at xtra.co.nz
regards
