I'm not also good at hardware, everybody does. Paulo must be right. You have only 1 sound card, and your internal PC speaker is not the default audio output and is not the real speaker to which your audio device(AC'97) will be able to communicate. Internal speaker will be used exclusively by your BIOS(motherboard) to generate errors or beeps especially during startup(POST), did you hear 1 beep when you power-on your PC? That is your internal PC speaker speaking to you. Your OS will also use the Internal speaker when there is no audio device or the proper audio drivers are not installed. Playing with Linux ever since, I did not encounter with sound problems, except that when I have two sound cards installed lastly. So try to open your mixer as what Paul suggested and then try to uncheck mute check boxes. You must check the master volume and the wave output from the alsa mixer to make sure that they are not muted. I'm am using Windows right now so I was unable to launch
alsa mixer. Try to open video/sound files - ogg, mp3 or any sound/video files and play them in your favorite media player. Open up the mixer and then tinker with the mixer's volume controls until you will hear a sound coming from your external speakers...Also, you need to check the audio cable from the back of your PC if it was correctly installed.
Happy tweaking...

Try running alsamixer command in a console and then tinkering with the mute/volume controls of that program until you get sound. This is considering that alsa did detect your hardware.

I checked on the specs of the PC. The audio specs is
Audio Realtek ALC861 High Definition audio codec 3D audio compliant with AC'97 Rev. 2.3 and HD Audio compatible Internal PC speaker
Im sorry for not being good at hardware. Correct me sir, is there is only one audio output which is the Internal PC Speaker?
Thanks,

Carlo,
Please check if you have two(2) sound cards installed. I already had that problem before, even if the drivers seems to be working for the two soundcards, I did check the test
sound button(?) and its working, but when I play a video file, there was no sound. I was unable to fix this even with changing the default audio device, so I remove the other one and the sound was now working
for all apps.

but the sound. Though the drivers are present (alsa and realtek) but it still does not work. Is there a way to solve this?
Thanks,
