Dude,

Technically, it's hard to get rid of the command line (or "shell", as it is
called in Linux). The system essentially runs on the shell, and would not
function without it. Those gizmos and applications (take Synaptic or Update
Manager, for example) are just graphical interfaces to the 'apt' program in
Linux (Debian). The shell can even function without these widgets, but the
same cannot be said otherwise.

Yeah, you can use the GUI for apt which is Synaptic. It's preset with all
the functionality you need.

Just my 0.02 cents worth. Borne from experience :)
