Interesting - but the plugin was not enabled. And I found a solution:

I can confirm this now: same symptoms on classic with compiz.

I checked out the workarounds in ccsm:

"Fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx" --- did not help for me
"Force synchronization between X ang GLX" --- did solve the problem,
although I do have an ATI card, but performance suffered
"Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint" - did solve the
problem, with less performance issues

Found these tips on a SuSe bug list...

And somebody else had a similar problem and highlighted the bug

and in retrospect, I had similar problems with the panel - and he was using
an intel card as well.

So - there seems to be some glitches with compiz, but it seems to be fixed
for me now.

Still: any more ideas?
