I am also a big fan of restoring/ returning to default settings.
For /etc therefor I use etckeeper. Having the relevant config files
under version control with a neat gui wrapped around would provide a
nice way to let people pick previous settings. Though this might be a
little overkill and I am in no place to provide functionality or a gui,
I still wanted to point out this possibility.
