[CoLoCo] External Ubuntu HDD?

Some of you know that I have been asking about booting Ubuntu off an
External HDD, for school.
I have learned that there are a few things that need to be tweaked such as:
editing initfr modules
using chroot to initially set things up.
making sure GRUB works as it should.
and a few other things... one of which is video...
(for video I can either try and use VESA, or try and "steal" the script
which is used on the Live-CD)
And, I think I can get those worked out ok, but I had some other questions.
Is it possible to make an external Ubuntu HDD compatible, so it can boot on
either MAC or PC's?
I know there are different Install CD's, because each system has very
different hardware and such. Would it be feasible to try create such an
install, or should I just stick to one for PC's only?
I'm thinking it might be too much trouble, but if not then I might consider
it.
Thanks. Your insight would be appreciated.
