When I was going to Thompson Valley, most kids just needed a word processor
for doing reports. If you were on a PC kids would use microsoft word, and
most people if they were on a mac actually used adobe indesign. After having
taken the computer graphics classes, i myself prefer adobe indesign, but
otherwise i use open office. I think open office now works out-o-the-box on
macs now. I don't think you need to install x on macs to use it.
