1 - Honestly, I stick with 32 bit. I have had sooo many headaches with
various applications and software (Flash, Air and Boxee included) on 64 bit
that I just decided to stick with 32 bit until things get better. Maybe it
has gotten better since a year or so ago but I have not dared to try it
again since. Another thing I recommend is to go check out the various
applications you use and make sure they all have a 64 bit version. Looks
like Boxee now has 64 bit but not sure about Air (if you use that)
2 - I stick with Eclipse or NetBeans for anything Java related and actually
use the default text editor, Gedit, for my other scripting application. I
think it comes stock with the code highlighting for various programming
languages...you just select it in the bottom corner and/or it should detect
the filetype. To do editing directly on a server I usually connect via the
file manager (Nautilus) and then open the files via Gedit. Another great
application I have used in the past is Komodo edit. It is a little bit more
powerful but also uses more memory (

3 - A year or so ago I would have recommended SongBird but they turned their
back on the Linux community (I am still obviously pissed about it). Now I
use Rhythmbox and Banshee. Both are pretty good and can be used to connect
to your Android device and Ubuntu One music store. Other music players and
related stuff to take a look at are Clementine (
http://www.clementine-player.org/) and Cover Gloobus (http://gloobus.net/).
Oh yeah...and VLC for everything else!
Other: Since you are coming from Mac-land check out Docky and Gnome-Do for
your application dock and quick launcher. Both have plugins and helpers for
some of the applications listed above. I use the dev repo for Docky for new
features and it is still pretty solid
Lastly, add OMGubuntu and maybe even UbuntuGamer to your RSS feed if you
have not done so already. They do a great job in informing you about the
latest and greatest in the world of Ubuntu and Linux applications
