Don't be timid.  If you feel restricted by your hardware resources, you should 
look at some of the leaner desktop environments, or just switch to a window 
manager by itself.  You can stay with Ubuntu and not run gnome and unity.  You 
can even run one of the other *buntus.  I personally prefer Kbuntu with 
Lubuntu as the fallback for old hardware.  I like all the features that you 
get with gnome or KDE, but I got everything done just fine back in the day 
running windowmaker by itself.

Also, I have to say that some of the complainers I read on there should 
consider themselves lucky to have such a mature clade of linux distributions.  
I still remember installing and using slackware 2.3 back in 1995 and I can 
tell you that much has changed.  Even compared to OpenSUSE back in 2000 lots 
more has changed.

Finally, whatever the perception, I doubt if people are jumping ship from 
Ubuntu, that they are going to windows, so there's not really a problem.
