The user account in Ubuntu does not have administrative privileges. In order
to have permission to write to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, you must prefix the
command with sudo, such as:
On the terminal:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the GUI (run from Alt + F2):
gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
