Yes you are right there is not a huge selection of fonts provided with
Open Office. However you can install any True Type font in Ubuntu and
that will work fine. Check here: http://www.openfontlibrary.org/

I don't know much about other Word processors. Be careful though. I
don't think that any amount of convenience would be worth putting a
non-free Word processor on your computer. Open Office is a very powerful
app and once you learn how to do everything in that you will find it
just as powerful if not more so than proprietary software.
