This is really something that should be posted on Ubuntu Forums.  Aside from
that, I would recommend booting from a livecd or usb (when you get one),
recovering your /home/<username> directory and either storing it on attached
media or ftp'ing it to a temporary location, or even creating a temporary
partition on your hard drive - all can be done from the livecd or usb.  When
you do reinstall, place your /home directory on a separate partition per the
Psychocats "separatehome" tutorial<http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome>.
In the future you can reinstall the operating system and keep user files
from that /home partition.  Also, when your installation is complete and all
updates and applications you want installed are completed, make a backup
image of the partitition using Partimage (which can also be accessible from
the livecd).
