Do you mean the HP DeskJet 5550? If it's that model, I've been using
it with no problems with the "hpijs" driver. Mine also happens to be
plugged into a WinXP machine, which shares the printer via SMB. I
would imagine things would work as good or better with the printer
physically attached.
