Actually I had to remove Warty to install Hoary on my
Laptop. Then I began writing to this forum when I got
the tiny display using Hoary.

Due to a misunderstanding of my first email a fellow
user thought I still had Warty installed on my Laptop
and suggested I get the Monitor info from the
XF86Config-4 file to put into Hoary's xorg.conf file

Well, of course, Warty XF86Config-4 was gone at that
point.

So, I tried an experiment in desperation: I ran a
Knoppix LiveCD (ver. 3.7) and went and got it's
Monitor AND Display Info from it's XF86Conf-4 -
uploaded it to my Yahoo email acct and restarted the
Laptop to load Hoary; downloaded the info and inserted
it into Hoary's xorg.conf file; rebooted and found
Hoary's displaying ablity was totally trashed (and it
told me so too!).

So, I wiped the Laptop's drive - reinstalled Warty and
got it's XF86Config file and uploaded it to my Yahoo
Acct.

I then reinstalled Hoary (it took 4 hours - unlike
Warty which completes in about 2).

I downloaded the Warty file - gots its monitor
settings and put them in Hoary's xorg.conf file -
rebooted and VOILA - THE DISPLAY WAS NOW NORMAL AGAIN.
<HURRAY!>

BUT . . . . <yeah there always has to be a but>

now the Laptop with Hoary loaded on it runs like
molasses in winter: if I click on anything at all
there is a latency of up to 5 seconds and further if I
try to shut down the Laptop from within Gnome 2.10 or
run the HALT command <after pressing crtl-alt-F1> at
the terminal, the Laptop takes about what seems like
a googleplex of years to finally shutdown. It is also
the same for a reboot.

Yes, it does seem that <we have no bananas today> but
a few things to report as possible bugs.

As for sending the contents of the Warty files to
'bugzilla': well, once again - Warty is gone off the
Latop but its XF86Config-4 file is perserved at my
email account. And I'll just have to crank up the
Laptop and wait and wait for Hoary to come up - and
when it finally does - I'll get the contents of
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files from it and send them
off with the notes of a possible bug.

The Laptop in question is ancient -- its a generic
brand - only has a 4 GB harddrive, 380 MHZ CPU and 256
MB RAM (its maxed too no more RAM can be added on the
Motherboard). I've never updated the BIOS which at
boot up time shows it was built on 03/17/2000.

I am beginning to wonder whether this Laptop just
might have crossed over the line and may not be able
to be used with Hoary and maybe I should seek out a
Linux Distro for it that works with geriatric
computers.

By the way I am using another more up-to-date date PC
which I bought only a month ago and on which I
installed Warty which runs flawlessly. Indeed I am
writing this email using it. Being as it is my main
computer and being as I've spent countless hours
tweaking it to just my tastes I really don't want to
experiment with Hoary in it. I'll wait until Hoary is
final before I upgrade from Warty.

Anyway - I'll still send the info to bugzilla as soon
as I can get it off the Laptop - the Development Team
might find it helpful . . . or quaintly interesting.

I do thank all those who tried to help - esp. the
fellow user who suggested taking Warty's XF86Config-4
Monitor settings and putting them in Hoary's xorg.conf
file -- it was the ulimate key to the display problem.
