warty - vertical colored lines appear shortly after login

hi guys. i'm having this wierd problem that started yesterday. i went
on vacation for about a week. when i got home, i moved my mouse to
activate the screen, and got these bizarre vertical lines instead of
gdm. after a couple of seconds, the lines disappeared and gdm came up
as normal.

then, this morning, i logged in and fired of firefox, and after a
couple of seconds was given the same wierd colored lines. again, after
a few seconds (but longer this time), the screen came back and i was
able to go about things as normal (and post this message).

i was wondering if anyone knew anything more about this type of behavior...
