warty - vertical colored lines appear shortly after login

okay, so now this problem is becoming more frequent. the only change
that i can think of that would make this happen is, i created an
account for a 3 yr old in my house that uses a smaller resolution than
mine (which is also the default for the system: 1024x768). any tips or
advice would be very helpfult.
