This is not true. I /have/ removed Firefox and OpenOffice.org both and I 
didn't have to remove ubuntu-desktop and I didn't have problems 
upgrading from Warty to Hoary or from Hoary to Breezy. I've done this on 
my two computers (3 upgrades in total). I also did this twice on the 
Ubuntu OEM installation and it didn't remove ubuntu-desktop.
