Booting "single" didn't work, but I booted knoppix from CD and looked
at the log files you mentioned. Here is gdm log:

Seems to be various issues with mouse and synaptics touchpad drivers.
The thing that perplexes me is that these logfiles are all timestamped
for 14:32 this afternoon. This makes sense insofar as this is the
timeframe of when I ran "update-manager -d" but doesn't appear to
register any subsequent attempts to boot, such as that of ten minutes
ago.
