From your logs, two things: the 'synaptics' driver & '/dev/input/mice'.  The 
latter will definitely prevent X from coming up & showing you the desktop.  
You need to check your xorg.conf file to see if that is specifying your 
devices correctly.  Older versions of X used /dev/mouse, then changed that 
to /dev/input/mice.

As to why you cannot boot into single-user mode puzzles me.  Have you checked 
your grub.conf (menu.lst) file to see that everything is specified correctly?  
I think that the wrong setting for your monitor (desktops)/LCD screen 
(notebooks) might also cause a problem.  I noted something about agpgart not 
working, either.  I'm afraid I do not know much about that one, however. :-\
