It's not very similar - at least to the BASIC I used to know which
was, well, basic.  However let me plug Python: It's an easy-to-learn
object-oriented language.  If you are prepared to learn a new
language, Python is a good one to try.

I think using a modular, object-oriented approach could simplify that
sort of code greatly.  This is getting a bit off-topic, but if you want
to try it out, look at www.python.org.
