I had trouble setting up my WEP as well, and unfortunately I wasn't able to
get my card (WG311v2) to stay connected consistently. I noticed a few things
that helped things work, however.
If you check the router to see if you're using a SHARED or OPEN key system -
make sure you are using OPEN. This is not the prefered method of connection,
but you won't get any results otherwise.
Make sure to enter the key correctly (duh) - and I had to set the iwconfig
parameters to insure the card was in MANAGED mode. Here's my iwconfig
command line:
#sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid family channel 4 sens 2 mode managed key <snip>
power all commit
This works for me when I first start up, and often works for a while. The
problem I then have is that the card disconnects and restarts many times. It
helps to check the log when you start up the system:
#tail -100 /var/log/messages
and check for any strange messages about service not running, radio
recalibrating, etc.
Hope this helps, and that you have better luck keeping it consistently
connected.
