What modems work with Ubuntu?

I expect you're right.  There's simply not much call for modems in most of
the 1st world these days.  If you don't have access to cable or DSL,
there's always satellite.  

I can't really see an alternative - you pretty much have to concede that
(small) part of the market to Windows, because we don't have the necessary
resources to make all the Winmodems work with Linux.  There are still some
modems that do, though.
