What modems work with Ubuntu?

Yes, I use dialup exclusively and am able to configure a (win)modem
fine. I'm using a smartlink USB modem with an open source driver from
linmodems.org. Other non-smartlink winmodems (intel, ali, et.al.)
that are part of the sound card are also supported by this linmodems
driver. You can fetch it from the ubuntu archive (sl-modem-daemon and
sl-modem-source) or use the latest, frequently updated version from
linmodems (which is what I do). It's pretty easy to identify and
configure your modem if it's supported (and a lot are). So, give it a
try.
BTW, I've also tried a serial port hardware modem and found it no
better than the smartlink usb (which you can find cheap on ebay).
But, on my laptop, the ali works with the latest linmodem driver.
Possibly, at some point in the future this will be done by Ubuntu, but
it's not in Breezy. I think you have a good point. Maybe you can
suggest this on the wiki or via a bug report.
