xearth doesn't do anything

When I run xearth, it just sits there. No image is displayed on the root
window.

That is, I mean I see no image displayed. Perhaps the Gnome WM is
covering the root window.

Anyway, how do I get xearth to work with Gnome/Ubuntu?
