Here's an alternative suggestion -- if you want to respond to a thread
but believe a more focused subject line would be advised, go ahead and
respond, but edit the subject line as you see fit and leave the
original subject preceded by "WAS," maybe surrounded by angle
brackets, as I've done here.

This is a long-standing tradition on email lists, especially once a
thread gets off the original topic, but could be used in this sort of
situation, too.
