I don't know, but I've got libcairo2 and libcairo2-dev installed. Might 
be the issue.

The only issue I had was it said that I had no inetd, so vmware couldn't 
start automatically. But it does start fine, just without me knowing how 
;-).

I have the same gtk2 as you reported. But also libgtk2-common and -dev. 
I actually don't know what causes this, but if you install cairo, you 
might be on your way
