When you compile something from source, instead of typing "make
install", type "checkinstall". This will generate .deb package so that
the program is properly integrated into the package management system.
That is, you will see your program in Synaptic, you can remove it etc.

"checkinstall" is a little program that is not installed by default, so
you be sure to install it :-)

Yes, I am running "Dapper" as I am writing this, and I can assure you
that it is in Ubuntu now. I know, I installed it, it works :-)

You can search for Ubuntu packages there: http://packages.ubuntu.com

which will confirm that avidemux is not in Breezy, but IS in Dapper :-)
