Looks like you sorted it out anyway - but I think the errors you were
seeing re: "cannot open display" were related to kdm or the session still
running, even though it wasn't obvious. If you had done

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop

then either 

startx `which startkde`   or

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (or just "start")

I think the error would have disappeared.
