Solved a little too easily, actually. Seems that now the interface is
insisting on not only being eth1 but also is insisting on being 'disabled'
according to wifi mgr in KDE.
Forgive me... however, in Gentoo I knew exactly where to look for the
interface setup: /etc/conf.d/net. That doesn't exist in Kubuntu. I have
aliased it in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases --though I have yet to reboot, of
course. Guess perhaps that is fast becoming a linux phenomenon as well. No?
