[Dapper] Xgl : doesn't use H/W rendering ?

It does do some more "magic." ;) It causes the Nvidia driver to be 
loaded automatically at boot among other things. However, with regard to 
the DRI lines at the bottom of xorg.conf, ignore them. They do not come 
into play unless dri is enabled, which it is not if you uncomment teh 
dri line. To get an Nvidia card working in Dapper, there is a simple 
fix. Install the binary drivers fromt eh nvidia website, then install 
nvidia-glx. In earlier Ubuntus this would break the graphics driver. In 
Dapper this is the only way to get it to work. This is the method I 
used. I hope it works for you.
