Hmmm, I can't quite understand how/why the package manager would run
once the system is installed, that's very strange indeed. Unless you
launch it manually, I can't see how it would come up by itself...
AllI can think of, is the "update-manager", which should put red icon in
the top panel, to tell you that there security updates available, which
you should install. But even then, it will only notify you, but will not
install anything without at least asking you.

Maybe you are just hit with a Mac G3 specific bug ? A year ago I fancied
getting an old world tower G3 myself, as I happen to have a fetish for
them somehow, but Mac nuts on this list strongly advised me against
anything oldworld, so I gave up this idea, and since I don't like the
"New" World Macs, I gave up Macs altogether...

Also, I am little confused about what you have installed on the machine.
At some point you mention Edubuntu (wich uses Gnome IIRC), then you say
you tried Kubuntu (which uses KDE not Gnome).
Obviously KDE and Gnome both have their own set of particular bugs, so
it's important to know what you are running.

Then again, I don't have a clue what's worng here, and since I don't
know a thing about Ubutu on Mac, nevermind oldworld, well I will the Mac
boys step in, come on guys.... ;-)
